XPress Democracy

XPress Democracy AB was a Stockholm-based company born from my vision of harnessing technology to create a more inclusive and engaging democratic process. My goal was to build a platform that continuously kept the conversation between citizens and their representatives alive beyond just the election cycle.

The Vision Behind XPress Democracy

The core idea of XPress Democracy was to solve a critical issue in traditional democracies: the lack of meaningful, ongoing interaction between citizens and their government. Typically, citizens only have the opportunity to vote every few years, and after that, they often feel disconnected, as if their role ends there. I wanted to change that by creating a platform that enabled continuous political dialogue where citizens could directly shape the issues they cared about.

XPress Democracy was designed to be multi-faceted and accessible. It wasn't just an app; it was envisioned as a comprehensive digital and physical ecosystem, including a website, voting centers, and tools integrated into public media. The goal was to create an ongoing connection between voters and representatives by allowing people to propose ideas, vote on others' suggestions, and transform the most popular proposals into petitions. These petitions could be signed digitally and forwarded to the government, pushing representatives to act.

One of the most innovative aspects of XPress Democracy was its responsiveness rating for elected officials. Representatives were graded based on how often and how seriously they responded to popular petitions, which provided citizens with a clear view of how engaged their representatives were with the issues people cared about. This transparency fostered accountability, ensuring that representatives were motivated to act not just during elections, but consistently throughout their terms.

Another key feature was the concept of a political "weather prognosis"—a real-time map of the issues that mattered most to citizens across different regions. This feature would provide insight into national and local priorities, giving people and the media a clear understanding of what topics were most important in different areas, from education to healthcare to immigration. It aimed to create a culture where political consciousness was not only captured but also visualized, offering a powerful perspective on the pulse of the nation.

My Role and Team Formation

As the project lead, I took charge of building a talented team of experts in digital democracy, technology, and political science. Together, we brought the vision of XPress Democracy to life, focusing on developing a platform that encouraged real and continuous engagement. I oversaw every step of the process, from assembling the team to setting our strategic direction, ensuring that our primary focus remained on empowering citizens and fostering a more transparent and accountable democratic process.

Achievements

XPress Democracy achieved significant milestones in its early stages. Under my leadership, we received a 20,000 SEK grant from ALMI, which validated our approach and demonstrated the potential of the project to shape the future of digital democracy. I created a landing page, and the concept gained support from political representatives and international democracy experts, who praised its potential for increasing civic engagement and responsiveness. XPress Democracy also became the subject of academic research, highlighting its innovative approach to political engagement.

In addition to these achievements, I led a Kickstarter campaign to secure additional funding, which helped generate widespread interest and support. The project was also featured on a podcast where we discussed the future of digital democracy, further demonstrating its relevance and impact.

Challenges and Transition

Despite the early excitement and progress, XPress Democracy faced challenges in securing the funding required to build a secure and fully functional prototype. After two years of development, I led the board in deciding to sell the company. Although we couldn’t complete the full vision, the journey laid an important foundation for future initiatives in digital democracy and showed what is possible when technology is used to connect citizens with their government.

Future Goals

Even though XPress Democracy, in its original form, has ended, the vision of deep, continuous democratic engagement lives on. I continue to advocate for technologies that bridge the gap between citizens and their government, making participation in governance more meaningful and accessible for everyone. My goal remains to transform democracy into a system where every voice is heard—not just during election time, but every day.
